Getting an education is fundamental to moving our young people out of poverty and
into economic opportunity. So why are we struggling to ensure children make it all the
way through school? Perhaps it’s because we fail to see what they’re up against each
and every day.

Question 1.1: Five key challenges faced by learners in South Africa that
contribute to school dropout

Poverty and Hunger
Many learners go to school hungry, which affects their concentration and ability to
learn. According to the article, 2.4 million children reported going hungry
sometimes, often, or always (Baumann, 2018). This is a key factor that contributes
to dropout, as children struggle to engage in learning on an empty stomach.
