TRL3701 ASSIGNMENT 1 MEMO 2026
DUE MARCH 2026
Question 1
Discuss the possible core logistics activities that Pick n Pay could carry out to
fulfil orders.
Pick n Pay operates across multiple African countries and store formats, which means
its logistics activities must be carefully structured and integrated to ensure efficient order
fulfilment. According to Study Unit 1, transport performs a critical service within the
supply chain by linking manufacturers, warehouses and retailers. For Pick n Pay to fulfil
customer and store orders effectively, several core logistics activities are essential.
Transportation management is central. Transport creates time and place utility by
moving goods from suppliers and distribution centres to stores at the required service
level (SU1). Pick n Pay must decide on transport modes (road or rail), routing
schedules, load consolidation and delivery frequency. Efficient transportation improves
service reliability and reduces operating costs, which supports profit maximisation
(SU3). Given the competitive retail environment, operating efficiency including reliability,
speed and safety, is crucial (SU3, pp.24–31).
