Case study: Ubuntu leadership in a Western Cape school
A 2023 study by Kramer examined how school principals in the Western Cape use
ubuntu values — such as compassion, dignity and community — to lead inclusive
schools (Kramer, 2023). One principal implemented collaborative decision-making
and peer mentorship programmes to support learner inclusion. These practices
fostered a strong sense of belonging and improved school culture. However,
challenges such as limited resources and staff burnout persisted, highlighting the need
for systemic support.
