ENG1501 ASSIGNMENT 2 2026
DUE 19 JUNE 2026

Refer to Tutorial Letter 501 for a reminder of topic sentences, paragraphing,
argumentation, and incorporation of quotations. Write a paragraph in response to
each of the following questions: 1. The narrator of the story is nicknamed “Rock.”
Discuss her character by focusing on the significance of this name, and how
Danisile’s return influences her personal growth and sense of identity. Support
your answer with direct quotations and evidence from the story.

QUESTION 1: SIGNIFICANCE OF THE NICKNAME “ROCK” AND DANISILE’S
INFLUENCE

Zibusiso’s nickname, “Rock,” has two meanings. The first reason is that it comes from
her love of rock and roll music and her dream of learning to play the guitar like her
mother (Nkutha, 2013: 2). Then, it is linked to her disability, as she has spent her life
moving around in a makeshift wheelchair while other children teased her by calling her
“Rock ‘n Roll” (Nkutha, 2013: 2).Danisile helps Zibusiso see the nickname in a positive
way. Unlike other people, Danisile talks to her, fixes her guitar, and teaches her many
songs (Nkutha, 2013: 15). Through Danisile’s support, Zibusiso begins to feel proud of
who she is. She starts to believe that her nickname suits her because “every rock star
needed a stage name” and that “Rock” is the perfect name for a future music star
(Nkutha, 2013: 16).According to Tutorial Letter 501 (2026: 45-47), a round character
grows and changes during a story, while a flat character stays the same. Zibusiso is a
round character because she changes from a lonely and ignored child into a confident
person who accepts and values herself. This growth shows how Danisile’s friendship
helps her develop a stronger sense of identity.
