Lawrence is 9 years old and lives with his single mother and three (3) younger siblings in a shack in an
informal settlement. His mother is working long hours trying to provide for her family, resulting in
Lawrence and his siblings often being unsupervised.
One afternoon after school, Lawrence is caught stealing bread and sweets at a shop. He claims that he
was hungry and that he also wanted to give his siblings something to eat.
The shop owner phones the police and Lawrence’s mother is notified.

1. Lawrence’s mother is very worried that her son will have a criminal record. Explain to her
how Lawrence will be handled by the police official and the probation officer.
