a. Citizenship
Citizenship refers to the legal and social status of being a recognised member of a
particular country or political community, which comes with specific rights, privileges,
benefits, duties and responsibilities (Siyakwazi et al., 2018, p. 52). In South Africa’s
constitutional democracy, citizenship reflects two distinct formulations: citizenship as a
