ABSTRACT

The key to success in labor relations is the good relationship between bosses and
workers. Employers have ways to stop bad things like lockouts, but workers can push
back with strikes if they’re being treated unfairly. Keeping things fair means finding a
balance between what both sides want through talking it out. Trade unions are supposed
to make things better for their members by getting them better pay and working
conditions. But sometimes, they make workers worry more, especially during talks about
wages. We’re still not sure exactly how trade unions work to help their members. There’s
a question about whether they should listen to what workers want or make their own
decisions during talks. When trade unions get involved in politics, it can make things
uncertain for workers. A process called arbitration tries to fix things when they’re not fair,
but it can end up in legal trouble. It’s important to sort out disagreements in places where
both bosses and workers are looked after. Being allowed to strike and having rules about
pay are really important for making sure talks are fair. Making sure negotiations are fair
is key for both sides to trust each other. Long ago, collective bargaining was a way to
deal with conflicts, especially in big workplaces where lots of workers did similar jobs.
