RFP2601 ASSIGNMENT 3 2026
DUE 14 OCTOBER 2026

Reading in Foundation Phase Home Language: English
Portfolio

QUESTION 1
1.1 Explain why selecting age-appropriate texts to teach reading is important.
Selecting age-appropriate texts is important because it matches the learners’
developmental stage, reading ability and interests. Texts that are too difficult frustrate
learners and stop them from understanding the meaning. Texts that are too easy do not
challenge them to grow. Age-appropriate texts have suitable vocabulary, sentence
length, pictures that support the story and themes that children can relate to. This helps
learners succeed, builds their confidence and love for reading, and allows them to
practise the five components of reading (phonemic awareness, word recognition,
comprehension, vocabulary and fluency) at the right level (DBE 2011; study guide
Learning Unit 4). When texts are grade-relevant and culturally interesting, learners stay
engaged and make real progress in reading.

1.2 Three characteristics of each reading approach
Group guided reading
