Introduction Borderline Personality Disorder is one of the most common personality disorders yet is regularly misdiagnosed or ignored. Borderline personality disorder causes impairment and distress in social, occupational and role function, often accompanied by self-destructive behaviour and completed suicide. (Oldman et al.,2001). A prototype of a borderline personality disorder patient is seen as an angry, volatile patient who rejects help, blames others and behave self destructively. Their behaviour seems wilfully oppositional and they were referred to as dreaded pariahs. (Oldham, 2009). Borderline personality disorder is often misdiagnosed due to comorbidity with other personality disorders and overlapping of symptoms. It is also regularly ignored on grounds of the historical stigma around the disorder and the patients living with it. This article will attempt to Discuss, indetail, the problems related to identifying and diagnosing borderline personality disorder in adolescents within the South African context.
