The Value of Afrocentric Political Frameworks: A Critical Analysis through
Africana Womanism
Political philosophy has mainly been shaped by Western ideas. Thinkers such as Plato,
Aristotle, John Locke and John Rawls have influenced how we understand politics,
power, justice and freedom. However, their ideas often do not fully consider the
experiences of people in Africa and the African diaspora. This is a problem because
political philosophy should help us understand different societies and find better ways
for people to live together. If only certain voices are included, our understanding of
political life remains limited. The PLC3701 study guide explains that political philosophy
aims to “replace opinions about the nature of political phenomena with knowledge”.
However, much of the knowledge produced by Western political philosophy has been
limited because it has often left out the experiences and ideas of African people.
Afrocentric political frameworks can help address this problem by bringing in
perspectives that have been ignored or silenced.
