In 2018, John was sentenced to 12 years in prison for robbery and assault with intent to do
grievous bodily harm. During the crime, John, then 22 and influenced by a group of older
friends, broke into the home of Mr and Mrs Daniels, a retired couple, late at night. When Mr
Daniels confronted him, John panicked and struck Mr Daniels with a metal object, resulting in
serious injuries that required months of recovery. Although the couple was left traumatised, they
found some closure when John was apprehended and sentenced. However, as his parole
eligibility approaches, the Daniels family has had mixed feelings, with concerns about his early
release reopening old wounds.
Before the Parole Board considers John’s case, the case management committee
recommended that he attend a restorative justice orientation programme. During the sessions,
John gained insight into the impact his actions had on the Daniels family and expressed a
sincere desire to apologise for the pain he caused. Guided by a social worker, he composed a
letter to the Daniels family, requesting to meet and seek their forgiveness. After considering the
possibility, Mr and Mrs Daniels agreed to meet with John in hopes that the encounter could
bring them further healing and closure.
