1. The Concept of Progressive Discipline
Progressive discipline is a corrective approach to managing employee misconduct that
views the primary purpose of discipline as a means to inform employees of required
standards and to correct unacceptable behaviour rather than to punish them.¹ This
concept has been endorsed by the courts and is a cornerstone of the Labour Relations
Act’s (LRA) Code of Good Practice: Dismissal.² Instead of resorting to dismissal as a
