Read the following scenario and then answer questions 1.1
Lumumba Resorts in Cape Town consists of a game reserve, a golf course and a luxury hotel.
It has a workforce of 1 200 employees. Patricia has recently been appointed as the HR
manager and was told that Lumumba Resorts prides itself on being a leader in diversity
management. Yet, Patricia has observed that diversity is managed primarily by ignoring
differences and, instead, providing equal employment opportunities. It is clear to her that
Lumumba Resorts does not yet appreciate the diversity of people or see the advantages that
differences can bring to the business.
1.1 Differentiate clearly between the concepts of employment equity and diversity
management.

Kala is the owner of Sprinkles Bakery. One of her employees, George, is the head baker and
has taken two weeks’ sick leave. Shahidah is a junior baker who completed Grade 12 two
years ago and has been working for Sprinkles Bakery ever since. Benita is a retired teacher
and was recently hired as a new baker. In Godfrey’s absence, Shahidah and Benita are unable
to cope with the orders. Kala is helping to ice and decorate the cupcakes, as well as packaging
and delivering them. Apart from handling these additional responsibilities, Kala still performs
