GGH2604 Assignment 2 Semester 1 | Due 2 April 2025. Two essays provided for both question. PART ONE:
According to UNEP (2024). “Africa is rich in natural resources ranging from arable land.
water, oil, natural gas. minerals, forests and wildlife. The continent holds a huge proportion
of the world’s natural resources. both renewable and non-renewable.” Write an essay in
which you provide a critical examination of the anticipated effects on the environment due
to human use/exploitation of these resources in Africa as they relate to the following:
• Land degradation in southern Africa (Lesson 3 of the study material).
• Threats to the Fynbos biome (Lesson 5 of the study material)
The length of the essay must be between 1 000 and 1 500 words. You need to ensure that
you have referenced at least seven (7) academic sources.

PART TWO:
Through the use or Google Scholar, select a peer-reviewed journal article that examines a
natural hazard or disaster associated with wildfires in Sub-Saharan Africa and possible
mitigation strategies. The chosen article should provide significant information on the causes,
impacts and / or mitigation strategies associated with the selected hazard or disaster. Ensure
that the article is recent (published within the last five years) and include the title of the article.
Summarise the main research findings, key arguments, and methodologies employed by the
authors. The focus of your summary should be on identifying the causes, impacts, and/or
mitigation strategies related to the selected hazard or disaster associated with wildfires. The
length of the summary must be between 400-600 words. This journal article will also need to
be correctly referenced in the reference list.
