ENG1515
ASSESSMENT 3
UNITS 5 & 6
Due date: 10 September 2024
Question 1
1.1 Name and explain the purpose of the punctuation mark at the end of “DON’T YOU
HATE” in the cartoon.
According to my understanding the punctuation mark at the end of “DON’T YOU HATE” is
an ellipsis (…). The purpose of the ellipsis in this context is to create a pause and build
suspense, leading the reader to anticipate the completion of the thought. It sets up the
punchline, which is revealed in the text below the cartoon, thus enhancing the comedic
effect.
1.2 What is happening in the cartoon? Write a short storyline of the cartoon.
A learner/student is sitting at a desk with a test paper, appearing frustrated and
disappointed. The caption below reveals the reason for his frustration: he has realized that
he copied answers from a student who is even less knowledgeable than he is. This
scenario humorously depicts the consequences of cheating, highlighting the irony and
futility of such actions.
1.3 What message do you think the cartoon is trying to convey?
The cartoon is conveying a message about the pitfalls of cheating. It illustrates that
attempting to deceive by copying from someone else can backfire, especially if the person
you copied from is less capable or knowledgeable. The underlying message is that honesty
and personal effort are more valuable and effective than dishonest shortcuts.
