Question 1
1.1 Language is central to literacy and should therefore be integral to emergent literacy.
Based on this statement, discuss how the acquisition of language unfolds as
described by the following theorists in their approaches:
a. The behaviourists
According to behaviorist theory, language habits are shaped through exposure to
linguistic input from the surrounding environment and receiving positive reinforcement for
attempting to repeat and imitate specific linguistic patterns (Phatudi 2014). In this
process, family members play a vital role in a child’s language acquisition. Children listen
to the speech of family members and learn to mimic it. If the child is praised for their
speech, they are encouraged to repeat it. Conversely, if a child makes a mistake, the
family members discourage that behavior, leading the child to avoid repeating the
mistake. Skinner, a proponent of behaviorist theory, advocated the concepts of positive
and negative reinforcement (Vargas 2013). According to Phatudi (2014), when learners
produce correct language utterances resembling what they hear and experience, their
efforts are positively reinforced, forming language habits.
In response, infants generate more speech, contributing to their language development,
even within the classroom setting. It is widely acknowledged that a combination of an
effective teacher and a well-equipped classroom (rich in literacy resources) is pivotal for
a child’s language acquisition and learning.
