Question 1
1.1 Provide five (5) practical examples of opportunities that parents can create at home
to promote emergent literacy skills in the early years.
Storytelling and reading aloud
Parents can read books, magazines, or tell stories to children. This helps in developing
listening, vocabulary, and narrative skills (Study Unit 1, 1.4 & 1.5.3).
Engaging in conversations
Parents should interact verbally with their children daily and encourage them to talk back.
This builds speaking skills and vocabulary (Study Unit 1, 1.10.1).
Singing songs and rhymes
Singing nursery rhymes helps children recognise patterns and rhyming words, improving
their phonological awareness (Study Unit 1, 1.5.1).
Creating a print-rich environment
Parents can label objects in the home or provide alphabet posters, allowing children to see
and connect letters with words (Study Unit 1, 1.7.1 & 1.7.2).
Encouraging drawing and scribbling
Providing crayons and paper allows children to explore emergent writing, where they
assign meaning to their drawings and scribbles (Study Unit 1, 1.6).
1.2 Language plays a key role in literacy and should be an essential part of emergent
literacy. Based on this statement, explain the common connection among the following
