Empiricism and an Empirical Philosophy of Education

Empiricism is the philosophical doctrine that all human knowledge derives from sensory
experience (Locke, 1689). In its strongest form, it claims that the mind is a tabula rasa a
blank slate on which experience writes (Locke, 1689). An empirical philosophy of
education applies this epistemology to teaching and learning: knowledge is built through
observation, experimentation, and evidence rather than through innate ideas or pure
reason alone. In education, empiricism foregrounds subjects and methods that yield
verifiable, universally applicable truths (Higgs & Letseka, 2022).
