Constitution of the Republic of South Africa provides that everyone has the right to
privacy, this includes the right not to have their communication infringed. However
Social media have impacted the constitutional right regarding privacy. With the growth
of social media platforms, personal information has become accessible and more easily
protection of their personal data. Social media users often have to share sensitive
personal information to access certain features of these platforms. Such information can
be accessed by third parties, including advertisers or hackers, without the user’s
