understand and can do. The word “assessment” comes from the Latin word assidere,
which means “to sit beside” (Swaffield, 2011, p. 434). This shows that assessment
should be about supporting learners, not just testing them. The Higher Education
Quality Committee (HEQC, 2004, p. 121) explains that assessment means designing
tasks for learners and then judging their performance against set standards.

Assessment has important purposes in teaching and learning:
Diagnostic purpose: Assessment helps teachers find out what learners already knowbefore starting a new topic. This helps teachers plan lessons that build on what
learners already understand.
Formative purpose: This is assessment for learning. It happens during the learning
