Case Study 1: Teenage Mother in Crisis
You are a social worker at an NGO serving a township in Limpopo. At 15:30, you receive a call from a nurse at
the local clinic. A 16-year-old girl has brought her six-week-old baby in with signs of malnutrition and
dehydration. Upon further questioning, the mother breaks down and admits she has been struggling to feed the
baby due to lack of formula and support. She has been experiencing postnatal depression and feels
overwhelmed. She lives with her grandmother and two younger siblings (ages 7 and 10). The grandmother is
unemployed and relies on a social grant. The nurse is concerned about the baby’s health and the mother’s
mental state.
