Case Study 1
You are one of three social workers employed by an NGO. This NGO is the only organisation delivering social work services in the local township. It is 15:30. You receive a call from the social worker at the local hospital. She reports the following: A six-week-old infant (girl) has been admitted to the local hospital with internal burn injuries Doctors are busy with the infant. If the infant survives, she will have a tube implanted to be fed. This will be because of the severity of the injuries. The mother of the baby gave her poison to drink. The mother is 16 years old and resides with her mother. The household also includes two other children, aged 7 and 9 years, who do attend school. The social worker do give you the address in the local township.
1. How would you approach the case, in your answer, identify the risks, recommend appropriate interventions.
Case Study 2
A 9-year-old girl has been reported by her school as potentially experiencing physical abuse, evidenced by blue marks on her arms. The child lives with both parents. The child told the teacher that she has a good relationship with her mother but a strained relationship with her father. The suspected abuse has been ongoing for the past six months.

Case Study 3
The mother and her three young children aged 14 months, 3 years and 6 years live in a rented single room in a communal housing arrangement. The family shares a communal bathroom with other tenants. The whereabouts of the father are unknown. The mother leaves for the street each morning
and returns in the early evening, leaving the children unattended during the day. As a newly qualified social worker, working for a regional office of the Department of Social Development. You work from a remote office nearby the community where you render services. You receive a call from a concerned
neighbour who wishes to remain anonymous about suspected abuse and neglect of the children as described in Case Study 3. It is 15:00 on a Friday afternoon.

Case Study 4
A grandmother has approached your office for assistance. She has been living with and caring for her three grandchildren aged 7, 9, and 12 years, for the past four years. The children’s parents both passed away, the father in a car accident and the mother from COVID-19. The grandmother also has two minor children of her own, whom she takes care of alongside her grandchildren. She is experiencing significant financial strain and is struggling to meet the needs of both her own children and her grandchildren. The grandmother request that the grandchildren be placed in her foster care. Your manager allocates the case to you for intervention.
