Question 1
1.1 Discuss “unethical conduct” in the context of integrated social work practice
(ISWP) and provide relevant practical examples where necessary.
Unethical conduct refers to any action or inaction by a social worker that violates the
professional code of ethics, which is binding on all registered practitioners. In the South
African context, the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP)
prescribes the ethical conduct that social workers must uphold, including conduct
towards the profession, client systems, organisations, colleagues and society. Unethical
behaviour compromises the integrity of the profession and harms clients, who are often
vulnerable members of society (BSW3705 Tutorial Letter 102/0/2025, p. 9).
Examples of unethical conduct in ISWP
Breach of confidentiality – Disclosing a client’s personal information without consent,
except when legally required e.g., child abuse or threat of serious harm. For instance, a
worker who discusses a battered woman’s case with her abusive partner violates the
