TASK 1.1: DO YOU THINK THE INFORMATION CENTRE THAT YOU VISITED
PRIORITISES INFORMATION LITERACY TO ITS CLIENTS AND WHY? (10 marks)
1.1.1 Introduction
The information centre selected for this practical portfolio is [Name of Information
Centre] , a [type: public/community/special/academic/national] library located
in [Location] . Information literacy (IL) is defined as the ability to recognise when
information is needed and to locate, evaluate, and use it effectively (AIS3703 Only
Study Guide, 2009:101). This section evaluates whether the centre prioritises IL to its
clients.
1.1.2 Understanding Information Literacy
According to the AIS3703 study guide, information literacy is “aimed at understanding
the role and power of information in an information society” (AIS3703 Only Study Guide,
2009:101). An information-literate person is one who:
Is aware of their need for information and finds it
Identifies potential information sources
Develops successful search strategies
Gains access to information sources
Evaluates information
Organises information for practical application
Integrates new information in an existing body of knowledge
Uses information in critical thinking and problem-solving (Doyle, in Webber &
Johnston 2000:381-397, cited in AIS3703 Only Study Guide, 2009:101).
