witnesses/complainants, and police discoveries.

Informants play a crucial role in crime prevention and investigation. The police rely on
informants for intelligence regarding criminal activities, which can help prevent crimes
before they occur. The Protected Disclosures Act 26 of 2000 safeguards informants
against victimization, encouraging them to provide information without fear. Key aspects
of handling informants include:
Building rapport and trust: Police officials must develop a professional relationship with
informants to ensure a continuous flow of reliable information.
Verification of information: Informants may have their own motives for providing
information. Therefore, the police must verify and cross-check all data received before
taking action.
