1. Introduction
Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in South African schools is a pressing concern that
significantly impacts the safety, well-being, and academic success of learners. GBV
encompasses harmful acts directed at individuals based on their gender and can
manifest in various forms, including sexual harassment, physical violence, emotional
abuse, and cyberbullying. Schools, which should serve as safe spaces for learning and
personal development, often become environments where learners particularly girls and
gender-nonconforming individuals face discrimination, intimidation, and violence. This
issue not only affects the emotional and psychological health of victims but also hinders
their ability to fully engage in their education.
GBV in schools is crucial for creating a learning environment where all students feel
protected and respected. The presence of GBV perpetuates cycles of inequality,
discourages school attendance, and contributes to poor academic performance. Despite
efforts by the government and civil society to implement policies and awareness
programs, numerous challenges persist, including a lack of effective reporting
mechanisms, inadequate teacher training, and cultural norms that normalize violence.
Thus, it is essential to examine the different types of GBV prevalent in South African
schools, the obstacles to addressing it, and the strategies that can be employed to
foster safer educational spaces for all learners.
This source discusses how gender-based violence (GBV) can be addressed by
challenging harmful social norms and promoting equitable gender relations, making it
relevant for an introduction on GBV in schools.
