INFORMATION AND GUIDELINES ON PORTFOLIO
ASSIGNMENT 03: THE EXAMINATION PORTFOLIO
This tutorial letter contains the guidelines for Assignment 03. The examination portfolio (second
semester) also appears on the COM3706 myModules page (Assessment 03).

Important notice
In this module, we use Turnitin to detect similarities between assignments/portfolios and other
sources around the world. This means that you will continue to submit your assignments via
myUnisa. Turnitin, which is integrated with myUnisa, will generate a report showing the similarity
index. It is able to detect similarities from internet sources, AI tools, and previously submitted
assignments or portfolios. Do not share/compare your assignment with anyone because you do
not know what they will do with it. When the similarity scores are too high, we will investigate your
portfolio. If our investigation confirms that you cheated or plagiarised, your case will be referred
to the disciplinary office. Read the announcement on the myModules site for more information
about Turnitin.
Note that you will not be penalised if your Assignment 01 has similarities with your
Assignment 03 – portfolio (Turnitin normally excludes similarities in the same module,
same year and same semester).
Turnitin limits the number of submissions to three. We suggest that you submit your first version
48 hours before the deadline in order to have a chance to review your Turnitin scores and to make
changes before the cut-off time.
If it is the first time that you submit an assignment or a portfolio for a module with the Turnitin
plugin, you will be prompted to accept the Turnitin End-User License Agreement (EULA). This
is a once-off process. If you ignore or refuse to accept the Turnitin EULA message, your
assignment or portfolio will not be processed by Turnitin. Unfortunately, we will not mark an
assignment or portfolio that has not been processed by Turnitin.
All assignments must be typed. If an assignment is typed, Turnitin will be able to read the
content of the assignment. Only MS Word documents or PDFs that have been converted from
MS Word will be accepted. Unfortunately, we do not accept handwritten or scanned assignments.
If your assignment is handwritten or scanned, it will be returned to you with a zero mark.

As a researcher, you have to demonstrate that you understand the Unisa Policy on Research Ethics. We
have attached the Unisa Policy on Research Ethics for more information about the university’s stance on
ethical research (see Additional Resources). The prescribed book also has a section on research ethics.

COM3706/2/2026

Do the following:

• Explain your understanding of research ethics.
• Select the two most relevant basic principles of research and indicate how your research will adhere
to them. Read Part 2, Section 1.2, of the Unisa Policy on Research Ethics to learn about the 10
basic principles of research ethics.
• Attach the ethics class approval as an addendum to show that the research received this approval.

Conclude your research project with a brief paragraph. In other words, briefly remind your readers of what
was discussed in the previous sections of the portfolio and your research findings. See the feedback on
Assignment 01 to learn how to write a conclusion.
TECHNICAL PRESENTATION
5
Third-year students are expected to submit logically structured assignments that adhere to the principles
of technical presentation provided in Tutorial Letter CMNALLE/301/2024.
The importance of correct technical presentation cannot be overemphasised.

PLEASE NOTE
If you lost marks because of the technical presentation of assignments that you submitted
during the semester, make sure that the technical presentation of your examination portfolio is
correct before submitting it.

The following problems are often encountered with the technical presentation of assignments:

● Assignments are not properly structured because there are no headings or subheadings.
● Assignments do not have a table of contents, or the table of contents was compiled
incorrectly.
● A list of sources consulted is not included, it is incomplete (for example internet sources, the
prescribed book and the study guide are not cited) or it does not follow the correct style.
● Sources are not cited in the text.
● The correct referencing technique was not used. There is a specific way to reference internet
articles or news articles that are used as examples in an assignment. These sources should
be listed correctly in the list of sources consulted.

COM3706/2/2026
● Assignments contain numerous spelling and grammatical errors.
● The work is untidy.
● the spelling does not adhere to British (UK English) conventions.

Note: Remember that whenever you use a source, you must reference it both in the text and in
the list of sources consulted. This also applies to references to the study guide. As a third-year
student, you should be able to interpret and apply the supporting theory and to engage with it
critically; it is not enough to merely regurgitate the information in the prescribed book or suggested
reading material. You must be aware of the work of the seminal theorists associated with each
concept or term, and be able to discuss it critically.

SELF-ASSESSMENT AND SELF-REFLECTION
5 (150 words)

It is crucial that you engage critically with the arguments of seminal theorists. It is also important
to be critical of your own work; therefore, you must carry out critical self-assessment and selfreflection.
If
you
do
self-assessment
and
self-reflection
in
a
timely
manner,
you
will
be
able
to

address
some
of
the
shortcomings
in
your
work
and
improve
your
work
before
submitting
it.
There

are

no correct or incorrect answers for the self-assessment and self-reflection sections. Apart
from the advantages of a critical attitude, completing these sections of the portfolio assignment
will ensure that you earn five marks for each section.

Over the years, some students submitted self-assessment and self-reflection sections that were
too brief and not sufficiently detailed. Some students even left these sections out and lost the five
marks they might have earned. You are expected to write a minimum of 150 words for selfassessment

and self-reflection. No marks will be awarded by simply cutting and pasting
information for self-assessment and self-reflection that you submitted previously for other
modules. The self-assessment and self-reflection should be unique for each portfolio. It is a
violation of academic integrity if students submit a self-assessment and self-reflection that has
been submitted by another student.

ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES FOR ASSIGNMENT 03: THE
EXAMINATION PORTFOLIO
Study the prescribed book and study guide to complete this activity. We have provided additional
examples, detailed explanations and a variety of activities in the study guide to help you grasp

COM3706/2/2026
the foundation of the work. We advise you to write in your own words and provide detailed
answers. Note that, for five marks, your answer should contain a minimum of 150 words.

Ensure that you do not copy information verbatim from the prescribed book, the study guide, the
tutorial letter or any other source. Turnitin is able to flag portfolios that have a high similarity index.
When referring to a source, you have to paraphrase the information to show that you understand
the content. Even when paraphrasing, however, you still have to acknowledge the sources that
you consulted in the text and in the list of sources consulted. Where you quoted directly from a
source, you had to use quotation marks. Copying information verbatim without using quotation
marks will be regarded as plagiarism. Excessive use of quotes is also problematic. See Tutorial
Letter CMNALLE/301/2024 to learn how to cite sources correctly.

Refer to the feedback on Assignment 01 to see how to write the introduction, research problem
statement or main issue, subproblems, literature review, theoretical framework, and data
collection methods and techniques.

Preparing your portfolio for submission

Once you have finished your selected activities, you have to prepare your portfolio for submission.
The following points should help you in compiling your examination portfolio correctly.

1. Make sure that you provide a table of contents and a list of sources consulted, and that
both are placed with the activities. Add any addenda at the end of the activities, after the
list of sources consulted. All the articles that we request you to attach should be added as
addenda.
2. Add a cover page to the front of your activities. Include details such as your student
number, the module code, the semester and the year.
3. Submit your portfolio electronically via myUnisa; you have to save your activities and the
addenda as one file.
4. The declaration is NO longer compulsory because students are expected to accept the
honesty declaration during the submission process. You will not be able to submit your
portfolio without accepting the honesty declaration. Please read the honesty declaration
carefully because it is a binding contract between you and the university.
5. Before you submit, make sure that your cover page, table of contents, list of sources
consulted and addenda are all included in a single file. Do not upload files in a zipped
format. Submit the entire portfolio as one document. If you submit more than one file,

COM3706/2/2026
only the first file will be accepted. All other files will be discarded. The system will give
you only three opportunities to submit your examination portfolio; therefore, you need to
verify that the examination portfolio is correct and complete before you submit it. We will
not be held liable for any incomplete or incorrect portfolio that you submit. Online
assignments are accepted in PDF and MS Word. Do not exit the submission window until
the final screen appears that states your assignment has been submitted successfully. You
need to take a screenshot of the confirmation page as proof that you submitted your
assignment.

IN CLOSING
We wish you all the best in your studies for this module. We hope that you will enjoy the learning
material and complete the module successfully. We also hope that you will do well and that you
will learn a lot from it.
If you have any queries, please contact us at any time. We are here to assist you. You may
contact any of your lecturers by using the details provided in this tutorial letter.

findings and the theoretical assumptions. Also, indicate if the research achieved its objectives.

9 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
3 (90 words)
What are the limitations of the study? What would you like to recommend for future studies
(recommendations)? Were there any limitations to the study?

10 ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS
7 (210 words)

Go to the Additional Resources tab to download the ethics class approval.

Note: Students are expected to attach the research ethics approval as Addendum 6 (for 2 marks).

11 Conclusion
5 (150 words)

If
you

self-assessment
and
self-reflection
in
a

manner,
you
will

it.
There

are

no correct or incorrect answers for the self-assessment and self-reflection sections. Apart
from the advantages of a critical attitude, completing these sections of the portfolio assignment
will ensure that you earn five marks for each section.

You
need to take a screenshot of the confirmation page as proof that you submitted your
assignment.
