Plato’s Philosopher-King: Connecting Metaphysics, Ethics and Politics
Introduction
Plato’s idea of the philosopher-king is one of the most famous ideas in Western
philosophy. In his book The Republic, Plato argues that philosophers should rule
society. But why? The answer lies in how Plato connects three big areas of
philosophy: metaphysics (what is real), ethics (what is good), and politics (how to run
society). For Plato, these three areas are deeply connected. A person who truly
understands reality will also understand what is good, and therefore is the best person
to lead society.
