1.1.1 Indigenous Knowledge
Indigenous Knowledge refers to the cumulative body of knowledge, practices, and
beliefs that have been developed by local communities over generations through direct
interaction with their environment. It encompasses understanding about agriculture,
medicine, resource management, weather patterns, and ecological relationships that
are passed down orally from elders to younger generations. This knowledge is dynamic,
culturally specific, and deeply rooted in the local context where the community lives
(Shava, 2018: 12-13; Loubser et al., 2014: 41-42).
1.1.2 Totem
A totem is a symbol, usually an animal, plant, or natural object, that represents a clan,
family, or individual within a community and establishes a sacred relationship between
that group and the natural world. Totems serve as spiritual anchors that connect people
to specific species or natural features, and they carry cultural obligations to protect and
respect the totemic symbol, which often results in conservation practices that benefit the
environment
(Loubser et al., 2014: 44).
1.1.3 Taboos
Taboos are culturally prescribed prohibitions or restrictions that forbid certain
