PLS1501 ASSIGNMENT 1 2026
DUE MARCH 2026
1. The Special Status of the Form of the Good in Plato’s Philosophy (1000 words)
In Plato’s metaphysical and epistemological system, the Form of the Good occupies a
uniquely elevated position, superior even to other exalted Forms such as Justice,
Beauty, and Truth. Understanding why Plato accords this special status requires
examining his theory of knowledge, his metaphysics, and his ethical concerns as
outlined in the Republic and other dialogues (PLS1501 Study Guide, Study Unit 2).
The Form of the Good as the Ultimate Principle
Plato’s Theory of Forms posits that the sensible world of change and decay is but a
shadow or imperfect copy of the true reality: the eternal, unchanging world of Forms
(PLS1501 Study Guide, Study Unit 2, p. 40). Particular objects beautiful sunsets, just
actions, equal sticks derive their character from participating in the corresponding
Forms: Beauty, Justice, Equality. However, Plato does not leave these Forms in a flat
hierarchy. He argues that the Form of the Good stands above all other Forms, serving
as their ultimate foundation and unifying principle.
