1.1 Define the term “Naming conventions” and discuss the significance in an
African culture. Unit 3.4.
According to Unit 3.4 of AFL1501, naming conventions refer to the cultural practices
and rules around how names are given to individuals within a society. These
conventions are often influenced by cultural beliefs, family history, language, and the
values of a community.

In African cultures, naming is deeply significant because names are not just identifiers—
they carry meaning, history, and identity. A name can reflect the circumstances of a
child’s birth, ancestral connections, or hopes and aspirations of the family. Names often
serve as a link between generations and are used to maintain family and clan identity.
For example, a person may be named after a relative or ancestor to honor and
